World no. 1, Lee Chong Wei retained his All-England singles title on Sunday when he defeated his nemesis Lin Dan 21-17, 21-17 in 52 minutes. When he won the final point, Lee slumped to his knees in joy. It wasn't only because he had won the All-England title a second time. This was the first time Lee had beaten the Chinese to win a major competition. Lin Dan still leads 18-7 in terms of wins against the Malaysian. The win affirmed Lee's position as World no. 1 and gave him the distinction of being only the second Malaysian shuttler to win the All-England title in two successive years. Eddy Choong achieved the feat in 1956 and 1957. Last night's victory was also a psychological boost for Lee as he had always been criticised for only winning the less prestigious titles against Lin Dan. With a major title win under his belt, Lee will be more confident of challenging for the Olympic gold medal in London next year. When interviewed, national coach Rashid Sidek said Lee's success was a big breakthrough. The younger brother of Lee's former coach and mentor, Misbun Sidek, Rashid said, “He played a superb game and was able to overcome the psychological barrier against Lin Dan.”
